REST API mapping street-market stalls, opening hours and produce by neighbourhood in São Paulo. Written to learn query planning: the stall search went from 900ms to 40ms after the right composite index.

About the project

A personal project, built in spare time, to learn query planning in PostgreSQL. The data comes from the city's open files, imported by a weekly job on GitHub Actions. The first version of the stall search by neighbourhood and produce took 900ms. EXPLAIN showed a sequential scan on the produce table; a composite index (neighbourhood, produce) and a UNION in place of an OR brought it down to 40ms. Everything runs in Docker, from the database to the import job: anyone can bring the project up with one command.
